FOAM
Friends of Ancient Monuments

FOAM is an informal and occasional gathering of people who enjoy working in the open air, helping to enhance the heritage by clearing scrub, emptying moats and otherwise improving the appearance and preservation of ancient monuments. Because of the seasons, work tends to be in the Spring and the Autumn, but please contact Julian Richards or Marjolein Butler if you are interested in taking part or wish to propose another worthy project. (see CBA Wessex contacts page for their email addresses and look at the photo gallery to see what we get up to)

Recent projects have included :-

Wiltshire
Barrow groups near Stonehenge, where the Lake Barrows have been largely cleared but will continue to need an annual maintenance visit. At Old Sarum the work is much more publicly visible- the gap we have cleared can be seen clearly from the train. Some local opposition to this work has been countered by pointing out that the scrub is recent, dangerous and will eventually destroy the earthwork if left unchecked.

Hampshire
The moat at Odiham has been cleared and a maintenance visit should keep it trim for the rest of the year.

The steep slopes of Basing House are another challenge; local boy scouts enjoy scaling them and their energy can be put to good effect.
